Pre-Preparatory Department

Children can enter the Kindergarten at Netherwood, providing they are 'dry', at the age of 2 years. They will learn the basics of the Alphabet, Numbers, Colours and Shapes, working towards Desirable Outcomes - as well as being immersed in a caring, safe atmosphere in which to play. From here, they will move on to further academic development. Classes are small and well organised, allowing for maximum individual development. The teaching approach is multi-sensory, with regular assessments including an Entry Profile, Baseline Tests and SATS related testing.

The teaching staff work as a team to create a happy, friendly learning environment. Teaching Themes are used and all aspects of the curriculum are covered with strong emphasis being placed on the Core Subjects. Traditional education still has its place in this area of the School where Spelling Tests and Times Table Tests are a regular feature. The department runs frequent trips and visits out into the countryside and coast of Pembrokeshire, making learning a 'hands-on' experience. Special guests are also invited in to speak to the children, including those gentlemen involved in the 'Story Uncles Scheme'!

Preparatory Department

At the age of 7 years, our pupils move on from Key Stage One of the National Curriculum to Key Stage Two - many already well in advance of the national average for this stage. The Preparatory Department actually includes Years 3 - 6. Key Stage Two is covered in Years 3 - 5, while Year 6 is seen as a transition year between Key Stages Two and Three. SATS are taken at the end of Year 6 and our results are as much as 35% better than the National Average. Classes are again small, ensuring good personal contact. Children who need special consideration for both advanced and supportive work are catered for on a regular basis. The latest treatment of subjects like Science and Geography within the National Curriculum require specialist teachers in order to be taught efficiently. In a school with the diversity of Netherwood, we have no problem providing this facility and have each subject taught by the same specialist teacher throughout the Key Stage. Our newly introduced subject area, 'European Studies', ensures that all pupils in this Key Stage have a grounding in French, Spanish and German, as well as an understanding of the related cultures.

The traditional aspects of testing mathematics tables and spelling are still in place. Each class still has its own form room and class tutor, who is closely involved in both their education and welfare. The strong caring aspects of this system ensure that high standards are constantly attained.
